Georgina’s Gems
Richard Hamilton

Man, I don’t know about you girls and guys, but I have been obsessing over neutrals in all forms from dresses, pants, shoes to hats and nailpolish. I just love it. Nothing makes my life easier and more stylish than adding fun neutrals to my wardrobe with other neutrals or an occassional pop of neon color. Simple, quick and easy style on the go. That is why I was so inspired by this work by artist Richard Hamilton. Just in love, plain and simple. I know you have some neutrals in your closet and it’s time to mix and match them for a style that will keep you looking fashionable in under 10 minutes.

David Hockney

This week’s art piece inspiration is by artist David Hockney. I just love the modern lines, bold colors and sheer simplicity. This work just screams spring and summer time which is a perfect excuse to go scouting for some sun and fun fashion inspiration. Warm colors, simple forms, no frou frou just simple style. Can’t go wrong with that!

Artist Jacob Lawrence was unknown to me until I went digging for new inspiration. Lawrence was keen on painting the things and people he saw around him with  a heavy focus in Harlem. His work really plays to the notion of the human condition and is a pure reflextion of how he saw the world. I think more people should dig into themselves, explore unknown avenues of the world and find new ways to express their own feelings and impressions. The colors in this work are unusual, not typical of what one would see in reality yet they work together to give a static impression. Don’t be afraid to express yourself in unusual ways, whether in fashion, art or in experiences.

Rene Magritte

Is it just me or is life crazy these days? A million things going on, over here, over there, things are not always as what they seem. That’s why I thought this work by my favorite artist, Rene Magritte would be the perfect inspiration. His images always seem to mimick dream lands and ideas, the perfect manifistation of what goes on in the human mind. Dreams can be so random but at the same time give us perhaps a better idea of reality. That’s why I thought this would be the right inspiration for this week’s fashion and art outfit. The deep jewel tones and composition of the work translate nicely to an outfit for everyday wear. Dreams lead to wonderful inspiration, whether that be in art or fashion or a multitude of other things. What inspires you? The possibilities are endless.

This week’s style inspiration comes from a peculiar artist by the name of Arman. Arman was a French born American artist who took the artistic process to a whole new level. He liked to use objects as paintbrushes and then eventually would paint pictures of the objects and make them the actual subject of the painting himself. Art on a whole new level. This outfit is inspired by a painting of opened  paint tubes. I love the irony of the fact that the art is of the actual material that helps the artist create his masterpiece. The texture, the use of only 3 colors, and the subtle areas of pattern all lend to a dynamic (but not too flashy) and fun going out outfit. It just goes to show that you really can find inspiration anywhere you look, from art to everyday objects. What’s next? Fashion inspiration from food? I’d say that is fairly likely.

This week’s art and fashion inspiration comes from the recognizable work by famed artist, Robert Indiana, known around the world for his LOVE prints and sculptures. Since we are on the cusp of a new year I thought this week’s art would be the perfect reminder that we should love ourselves, those around us and life in general. The bright colors of this particular piece are indicative of the feeling of love itself– bright, solid, and warm. This seemingly simple work is popular because it resonates with every person alive. When people see the work it instantly stirs up memories and people in their minds, making this a perfect artwork for fashion inspiration. I hope you have a great new year and continue to find inspiration in your life, wherever it may come from.

Rene Magritte

This week’s fashion and art inspiration comes from one of my favorite artists, Rene Magritte. I am such a fan of the Surrealist art movement and I love the vibe of this painting. When examining a painting one can see that colors are not always what they appear to be, they are not always solid, but layers of different colors to give a work depth. I applied the same idea to this outfit with the subtle stripes and the metallic glow of the scarf to give the look a bit more ambiance. Fashion should be fun, and just like art, it’s all in the details.

Well it is almost Christmas time and there is holiday music in the air so I thought why not mix art and Christmas to produce a killer, out of the ordinary outfit? This work is by famed artist Mark Rothko. I love the notion of tradition that is felt throughout many aspects of the holidays so for this outfit I of course went with a holiday savvy dress in a vibrant shade of red. To accent the piece I decided on a spring green clutch with stripes for a modern, fresh take on traditional holiday colors. And to avoid the “too matchy matchy” look, I added a bold, striped color block scarf and a wonderful mustard yellow coat. Black boots are a must have in any wardrobe and complete the outfit. I love how versatile art is and when combined with the holiday season the fashion possibilities are endless.

Happy Holidays!

Picasso

I love this work of Picasso. The older I get the more I like things simple and straightforward. The hint of color in the painting is perfect inspiration for the cardigan piece and black, white and grey are a classic trio. Add some fun boots and you have a very smart look for winter with a dash of sassy thrown in!

Karl Schmidt-Rotluff

Lets face it, black and white is super classic, good for any occasion and makes quite a statement, plus we all have the basic black in white in our closets. This outfit is inspired by a woodcut by Karl Schmidt-Rotluff called Two Cats from 1915. The linear quality and the abscence of color immediately drew me to the work, although for me, black and white recalls my love of giant coloring books as a kid. I decided to make this black and white outfit fun by mixing different types of lines and patterns which can turn a seemingly ordinary outfit into just plain awesome. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and next time you take a walk to your closet don’t be afraid of the boring, just find some black and white and make it bold!
